| Almuñécar & La Herradura Guide |
|
Almuñécar and La Herradura, sitting on the western tip of the Costa Tropical, enjoy the perfect location and climate for scuba diving in Spain. The myriad of coves have an abundance of marine life guaranteed to delight all divers. But it is not just water sports enthusiasts that are drawn to this area; there is a diverse range of other activities on offer, including such delights as horse riding, walking, mountain biking, hang gliding, and bird watching.
Also noteworthy is the wonderfully historic past that Almuñécar has. The town was founded approximately 3000 years ago by the Phoenicians, who developed a thriving economy. Later came the Romans and they continued the development of the town turning it into an important southern trading post. By the time the Moors arrived, Almuñécar had become the most important town along the coastal area. The rich history of the town can be traced through the Archaeological Museum, which houses Phoenician artifacts; the remains of the fish salting factory in Majuelo Park; and the Arab Castle, which was built upon old Roman fortifications. ![]() La Herradura, just west of Almuñécar, is so named after its horseshoe shaped bay. This bay provides perfect conditions for all manner of water and air sports. Rarely can you visit La Herradura without seeing a hang glider, wind surfer or a group departing on a scuba diving expedition. Both towns offer a truly international feel with their numerous hotels, shops, bars and restaurants, along with giving visitors plenty of choice when it comes to activities available. Being conveniently situated midway between the international airports of Granada and Málaga, each approximately 1hr 15 mins away, ensures that visitors have the opportunity to take in the sights of these two cities. Popular attractions are the Alhambra Palace and the Sierra Nevada ski resort in Granada, the Alcazaba and Cathedral in Málaga, the port at Marina del Este, and the caves at nearby Nerja.
